I've talked over and over again on DUI defense and how difficult it can be for your Pa DUI lawyer to defend a client when the client goes above and beyond the crime.
I'm talking about those cases where someone is arrested for a DUI and then decides to add salt to the wound. Perhaps the offender tries to hit the officer. Perhaps the offender tries to flee the scene. Or perhaps the offender creates a public spectacle.
Or, in the case of Christine Bakkum 44, perhaps the offender tries to run over a police officer.
Or two police officers.
Christine Bakkum of Adams County, Pa., was arrested last Wednesday in Straban Township. She was wanted for several hit-and-run crashes in Gettysburg. When the Pennsylvania State trooper attempted to stop Christine Bakkum, she accelerated her vehicle and tried to run the Pennsylvania State trooper over.
But that wasn't the end of her tale.
Another Pennsylvania State trooper came to the aid of the first trooper. This time, the second State trooper tried to get Christine Bakkum out of her vehicle. Of course, what do you presume Bakkum did?
She tried to run the second State trooper over, as well.
Now, she is not only being charged with driving under the influence, but she also faces charges of reckless endangerment.
What baffles me is why anyone would want to make their case that much harder for their Pennsylvania DUI attorney to defend. The State of Pennsylvania does have some leniency at times for first time offenders (not to say that Bakkum was a first time offender). A Pa DUI lawyer can have some leeway in cases where the charges aren't too bad.
But to try to run over an officer-- well, perhaps I'm being cynical, but it might be fair to assume that there is quite a bit of work cut out for the Pa DUI lawyer in that scenario.
