Pennsylvania Drunk Driving, Wheelchair DUI in Middlesex Township

Believe it or not, a woman was arrested for a wheelchair DUI under Pennsylvania drunk driving laws during the early morning hours in a mobile home park in Middlesex Township.

According to The Patriot-News, police received a complaint at four in the morning of a woman crawling around a yard in the Country Manor mobile home park. When police arrived at the scene, 63-year-old Connie Lebo was sitting in her motorized wheelchair apparently drunk. She told police she had crashed her wheelchair.

Lebo's blood alcohol level was 0.16 (twice the legal limit) and she was charged with riding the wheelchair while under the influence of alcohol, reports the Patriot-News.

The Patriot-News noted that it was rare for someone to be charged with a wheelchair DUI, but under Pennsylvania drunk driving laws a person can be charged with a DUI for driving or operating any vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. Cars, bikes, and wheelchairs are not distinguished as vehicles.

In fact, even horses are not treated differently ...

Last month, in New Castle, two people driving a horse-drawn buggy were arrested for drunk driving after they crashed into a car. Both people were allegedly in control of the horse's reins while under the influence of alcohol, and so both people were arrested for the DUI.

Connie Lebo violated Pennsylvania drunk driving laws when she drove and crashed her motorized wheelchair while under the influence of alcohol. Lebo's wheelchair DUI should act as a reminder to all Pennsylvania residents that you should not operate any vehicle -- whether it be a scooter, skateboard, wheelchair, or horse -- while drunk.
