Child Endangerment Charges for Drunk School Bus Driver

Last week we wrote about Carole Crockett, the drunk school bus driver who drove around 25 junior high students with a blood alcohol level of 0.25.

Crockett has now been charged with her crimes and along with 25 counts of DUI she also faces child endangerment charges.

Parents of New Jersey junior high students received alarming text messages and calls from their children that their bus driver was drunk and falling asleep at the wheel, reports Fox News. When police finally caught up to Crockett, she was waiting to fill up her bus with another set of children.

Given Crockett’s alleged blood alcohol level, it was no surprise that the driver was charged with a DUI and could face aggravated DUI charges. However, given the special nature of her passengers — 25 young children — Crockett was also charged with the serious offense of child endangerment.

When people drink and drive, they should be aware that they not only expose themselves to DUI penalties but also other violations. For example, people pulled over for a DUI often also get ticketed for traffic violations like speeding or lane swerving. In addition, they may face penalties for things unrelated to driving like not having insurance or a license. And if children are around, sometimes the DUI can lead to more extreme penalties like child endangerment.

Carole Crockett was entrusted with driving dozens of young children. She was lucky to have avoided serious injury, but had the children not complained, there’s no telling what Crockett would have done with another load of kids.

For her actions, the drunk school bus driver faces not only DUI charges but also child endangerment charges.
