Pennsylvania DUI: Man Drives High with Flat Tire and Baby in Car

Drunk drivers don’t just put themselves in danger. After all, they aren’t the only ones on the road, and any accident can lead to fatal consequences for a driver or anyone who may happen to be nearby.

But in a disturbing trend for Pennsylvania DUI, more and more drivers are deliberately putting babies and young children in harm’s way. Last week, we wrote about Jeremy Irons, who was caught driving his motorcycle with a blood alcohol level well over twice the legal limit and a toddler straddling the gas tank.

This week, 30-year-old Charles Heffern of Franklin was arrested for driving under the influence of drugs with a flat tire and his two-year-old daughter in his car, reports the Associated Press.

Police followed Heffern because he was driving with a flat. However, Heffern refused to stop; he instead pulled into a parking lot and tried to evade capture by running into a store, reports the AP. It’s not clear if the man abandoned his daughter in the car or if he tried to make his getaway with baby in tow. Police arrested him anyway.

It wasn’t reported what drugs Heffern was on, but it doesn’t really matter. In Pennsylvania, it is illegal to drive while using drugs, legal or illegal, that impair your driving ability. Additionally, it is considered a DUI to drive with any amount of certain illegal drugs — like marijuana — in your system regardless of the effects the drugs have on your driving abilities.

Charles Heffern was arrested for a Pennsylvania DUI. Not only does he face the DUI charges, but he also faces penalties for evading arrest and endangering the welfare of his child.
